Obuasi, Ghana – Wundef Media | August 12, 2026 – Efforts to improve waste management and environmental sanitation in Obuasi have received a major boost following the donation of 400 waste bins and two waste collection tricycles valued at approximately GH¢660,000 by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.
The items have been presented to the Obuasi Municipal Assembly and the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly to support waste collection, encourage responsible waste disposal and help reduce indiscriminate dumping across communities.
The intervention forms part of AngloGold Ashanti’s Keeping Obuasi Clean Campaign, which was launched in 2019 under the company’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP).
The plan identifies sanitation and strategic partnerships as important areas for sustainable community development.
400 Waste Bins for the Two Municipalities
Under the arrangement, 200 waste bins will be allocated to the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, while another 200 will go to the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly.
Each Assembly will also receive a waste collection tricycle to support the collection and transportation of refuse from designated points.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr. Richard Assong of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine said the intervention was motivated by the importance of sanitation to the health and well-being of residents.
“Sanitation is one of the key pillars of our 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan. We believe creating a clean environment is essential for improving public health and the quality of life of the people of Obuasi,” he said.
Mr. Assong explained that the waste bins would be strategically positioned in communities to make it easier for residents to dispose of their waste properly.
He stressed that the initiative was being implemented in partnership with the two Municipal Assemblies, noting that collaboration with local authorities remains central to the company’s community development efforts.
According to him, the initiative reflects AngloGold Ashanti’s broader purpose of “Mining to empower people and advance society.”
Assemblies Pledge Proper Management
Receiving the items on behalf of the two Assemblies, the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, Faustilove Appiah Kanin, expressed appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for its continued support for development in the municipality.
Mrs. Kanin described the donation as timely, particularly as waste management remains a major challenge for both the Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East Municipal Assemblies.
She said the Assemblies would work through their Environmental Health Departments to ensure that the bins are strategically located, properly managed and maintained to achieve their intended purpose.
The MCE also appealed to residents to take responsibility for keeping their communities clean by using the bins provided and avoiding indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
She expressed optimism that the intervention would improve environmental cleanliness and contribute to creating a healthier and more attractive municipality.
Residents Have a Role to Play
While the provision of waste bins and collection equipment is expected to strengthen the capacity of the Assemblies, the long-term success of the intervention will depend largely on responsible behaviour by residents.
Proper use of the bins, regular collection of waste and an end to indiscriminate dumping will be critical to ensuring that the investment delivers lasting benefits.
The donation therefore represents not only an investment in waste management infrastructure but also an opportunity for residents, local authorities and other stakeholders to work together towards a cleaner Obuasi.
