Apagya Senior High School (SHS) in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region has successfully defended its title as champions of the 2026 World Environment Day Quiz Competition.

The school emerged winner of the competition held on Friday, June 5, 2026, as part of activities marking this year’s World Environment Day celebration.

The annual competition was organised by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine in partnership with the Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ghana, Keeping Obuasi Clean Campaign (KOCC), and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Obuasi Campus.

The winning team, represented by Robert Odame Addo and Raymond Donkor, was also rewarded with laptops, backpacks, notebooks, exercise books and other educational materials in recognition of their outstanding performance and commitment to environmental protection.

Promoting Environmental Awareness Among Students

The 2026 World Environment Day celebration was held under the theme:

“Inspired by Nature: For Climate, For Our Future.”

The quiz competition formed part of broader environmental awareness activities designed to educate young people on climate change, conservation and sustainable environmental management.

Other activities organised during the celebration included environmental education programmes, community sensitisation campaigns, radio discussions and school-based tree-planting exercises.

These initiatives aimed to encourage students to become environmental ambassadors and take active roles in protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

Building Future Climate Champions

The organisers highlighted the importance of engaging young people in environmental conversations, noting that students have a critical role to play in promoting sustainable practices within their schools and communities.

The competition provided an opportunity for participating schools to demonstrate their knowledge of environmental issues, climate action and sustainable development while encouraging healthy academic competition.

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and empower young people to contribute to a greener future.

The victory by Apagya SHS marks another milestone in the school’s environmental leadership journey, as the reigning champions continue to inspire other schools through their dedication to climate awareness and sustainability.
