Residents of the New Nsuta JJ Electoral Area in Obuasi have been assured of ongoing interventions to improve electricity supply following concerns over frequent power outages in the community.
This came to light during a community engagement forum organized by the Assembly Member for the area, Honourable Mohammed Issahaku, which brought together residents and key stakeholders, including officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Addressing residents during the meeting, ECG officials attributed the intermittent power supply experienced in parts of the community to the activities of unqualified electricians and illegal electricity connections.
According to the ECG team, some electricians undertake unauthorized electrical installations that overload transformers, resulting in frequent power interruptions and damage to electrical infrastructure.
They further disclosed that some residents procure inappropriate electricity meters, particularly post-paid meters, instead of the approved pre-paid meters designated for their communities, causing operational and financial challenges for the company.
The officials also lamented the reluctance of some residents to report individuals engaged in illegal electricity connections, a situation they said makes enforcement difficult.
Despite the challenges, ECG assured residents that efforts are underway to improve electricity supply in the municipality through government-backed interventions, including the replacement of old transformers with higher-capacity equipment to meet increasing demand.
Residents were encouraged to comply with electricity regulations and report illegal activities to help improve power reliability in the area.
