Obuasi Secures US$50,000 Climate Grant to Empower Youth and Promote Sustainability

The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has secured a US$50,000 climate action grant under the Youth Climate Action Fund, marking a significant step in the municipality’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and youth empowerment.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, announced the development during her Sessional Address at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Eighth Assembly held at the Old Assembly Conference Hall on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

According to the MCE, the funding will support climate-related initiatives targeting young people between the ages of 14 and 24, with a focus on environmental awareness creation, climate resilience education, youth capacity building, and sustainable environmental practices.

She explained that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen climate adaptation strategies while ensuring that young people actively participate in environmental governance and sustainability efforts within the municipality.

In a related development, Hon. Faustilove disclosed that Obuasi has also been selected under the Ghana Smart Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cities Programme, an initiative aimed at transforming selected secondary cities into smart, inclusive, and resilient urban centres.

As part of the programme, the municipality has already trained 15 young officers to collect socio-economic and spatial data to support evidence-based planning and informed decision-making.

The Assembly is also preparing its first Voluntary Local Review (VLR) report on the Sustainable Development Goals, which is expected to position Obuasi on the global development map and strengthen data-driven governance.

The MCE said these interventions are expected to help Obuasi become a more climate-resilient municipality while creating opportunities for youth participation in local development.
