The rains have officially started, and residents in Obuasi are already feeling the impact. This dawn alone, rain reportedly started around 4:00 a.m. and continued till about 10:00 a.m., with the sky still looking heavily cloudy.
While rain is a blessing for farming and helps cool the weather, it also comes with serious risks such as flooding, road accidents, electrical hazards, malaria, and damage to property. It is therefore important for everyone to take precautions to stay safe during this rainy period.
1. Avoid Walking or Driving Through Flood Waters
Flooded roads may look harmless, but they can be dangerous. Open gutters, potholes, and strong currents can easily sweep people away or damage vehicles.
If you are walking and the water level looks high, avoid crossing. Drivers should also be extra careful and avoid speeding through flooded areas as this can cause accidents or engine damage.
2. Stay Away from Weak Walls and Trees
Heavy rains are often accompanied by strong winds. Weak buildings, old walls, billboards, and trees can collapse without warning.
Avoid standing under trees during storms, especially when there is lightning. If you notice a cracked wall near your home, take precautions immediately.
3. Be Careful with Electricity
Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Avoid touching electrical appliances with wet hands and unplug devices if flooding enters your room.
If electrical poles or wires fall after a storm, stay away and report them immediately to the Electricity Company.
4. Cover Water Containers and Keep Your Environment Clean
The rainy season often leads to an increase in mosquitoes, which spread malaria. Avoid stagnant water around your home and clear choked gutters to prevent flooding and mosquito breeding.
Keep your surroundings clean and cover containers that can collect rainwater.
5. Motorists and Pragia Riders Should Slow Down
Roads become slippery during heavy rains, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents. Drivers, motor riders, and pragia operators should avoid overspeeding and drive cautiously.
Passengers should also avoid boarding overloaded vehicles during bad weather.
6. Keep Children Safe
Parents should pay close attention to children during this period. Children should not be allowed to play in flood water or near drains, as it can be life-threatening.
7. Be Prepared for Emergencies
Keep important phone numbers handy, including those of NADMO, the Fire Service, Police, and Ambulance Services. If you live in a flood-prone area, move valuable items to safer places early.
The rains may continue over the coming weeks, and while we cannot stop nature, we can prepare and protect ourselves. Safety should be everyone’s responsibility.
As Obuasi experiences more rainfall, residents are encouraged to remain alert, stay informed, and take precautions to protect lives and property.
Remember: No destination or activity is worth risking your life for during heavy rains. Stay safe.
