In the early hours of January 19, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine when small-scale miners, attempting to access a portion of the mine, clashed with soldiers stationed at the site. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of nine miners, reigniting discussions about the recurring tensions between illegal miners and security forces at the mine.
The Incursion: Miners Enter Through Anwiam
According to one of the miners present who spoke to Kwame Marfo of Time FM in Obuasi, the group gathered at Anwiam before making their way to the AGA concession. Their leaders had assured them that the targeted area was not under active operations by AngloGold Ashanti. They were instructed not to carry any weapons, emphasizing that their mission was solely to make a living by mining in the unused sections of the concession.
Upon reaching the site, the group began cutting through the perimeter fence. The leaders entered first, scouting the area and signaling the rest to follow. As more space in the fence was being cleared to allow additional miners to pass through, military personnel arrived on the scene.
Initial Interaction with the Soldiers
The soldiers, tasked with safeguarding the concession, immediately ordered the miners to retreat. However, some of the group’s leaders approached the military personnel to plead their case. They explained that their intentions were not combative but economic—they were there to work and earn a livelihood.
While the leaders engaged in dialogue with the soldiers, the larger group waited at the breached section of the fence. The situation appeared tense but peaceful, with hopes of reaching a compromise.
The Tragedy: Gunfire Erupts
Amid the negotiations, gunshots suddenly rang out. Witnesses initially believed the shots were either blanks or warning shots intended to disperse the crowd. However, as they turned to assess the situation, they saw the bodies of those who had been kneeling in front of the soldiers lying motionless, riddled with bullet wounds.
Panic ensued as the remaining miners scattered, fearing for their lives. In the chaos, it became clear that nine individuals had been fatally shot. Their lifeless bodies lay at the scene, marking the culmination of what had begun as a desperate attempt to secure a livelihood.
Aftermath
In the aftermath, agitated miners took to the streets, vandalizing property and setting vehicles ablaze. Four vehicles, including buses belonging to the mining company, were reportedly torched, further escalating tensions within the Obuasi community.
Earlier in the day, the mine issued a warning to its workers to exercise caution. Additionally, the AGA School, operated by the mine, has advised students to remain at home on Monday and Tuesday while the security situation in the area is assessed.
The Mine is yet to comment on the incident.
