Obuasi Youth to Stage “Let There Be Light” Demonstration on June 27

Frustrated by months of power instability, the youth of Obuasi are mobilizing for a massive demonstration dubbed the “Let There Be Light” protest, scheduled to take place on Friday, June 27, 2025. The protest aims to demand urgent and lasting solutions from GRIDCo, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and local authorities over the ongoing power crisis affecting the municipality.

The demonstration comes at a time when Obuasi continues to reel from erratic electricity supply, worsened by the May 2025 fire outbreak at the GRIDCo substation, which further crippled power distribution in the area. Despite assurances from ECG that a new transformer is being installed to stabilize supply by the end of June or early July, tensions remain high.

Youth Demand Accountability

Organizers of the protest say the demonstration is a peaceful yet firm call for action, and a collective cry from the youth and affected residents for leadership and utility providers to treat the crisis with the urgency it deserves.

“We are tired of the darkness, the losses, and the excuses,” said one youth organizer. “We want light, and we want it now. This demonstration is to tell those in charge that enough is enough.”

The demonstration is expected to attract hundreds of residents, business owners, students, and community leaders who have been severely impacted by the power outages.

Support from the Community

In a sign of growing solidarity, some individuals and local businesses have pledged sponsorship for the protest by donating water and soft drinks to refresh participants during the march. Organizers say more support is welcome as they prepare for what is expected to be one of the largest demonstrations in Obuasi in recent years.

Route and Additional Details Coming Soon

While the exact route and logistics of the demonstration are yet to be finalized, organizers say details will be communicated in the coming days through social media.

Background: A Crisis Still Unresolved

The protest comes in the wake of widespread dissatisfaction with how the power crisis has been handled. Although ECG District Manager Ing. Albert Agyabeng recently revealed on Aseda FM that a new transformer has been brought from Tema and is currently undergoing programming and tests, many residents remain skeptical until power is fully restored.

Businesses, particularly those in food and retail, have reported massive financial losses, while schools, health centers, and homes continue to struggle with the unpredictable supply.

A Peaceful March, A Powerful Message

With emotions running high but the desire for peace still strong, organizers of the “Let There Be Light” demonstration say their mission is not to fight but to shine a light on a problem that has kept Obuasi in the dark for far too long.
