A devastating flood has rendered the main road linking Gomoa Buduburam and Gomoa Aprah in the Central Region impassable, leaving hundreds of commuters and residents stranded. The road, which is a major route within the Gomoa East District, has been split into two following a heavy downpour.
The flooding, which occurred after the Buduburam River overflowed its banks, was worsened by unauthorized structures erected in water channels by some residents. The floodwaters swept through homes, displacing several residents and causing significant damage to property.
The most affected section of the road has become a dangerous zone, where vehicles risk getting stuck or damaged. To make matters worse, some young men in the area have turned the situation into a money-making opportunity by charging desperate drivers and pedestrians before helping them navigate the broken road.
In an interview, affected residents expressed their frustration and appealed to the Gomoa East District Assembly, the Member of Parliament for the area, and former President John Dramani Mahama to urgently intervene. They specifically called for the demolition of a filling station and other unauthorized structures that have blocked waterways and contributed to the disaster.
“We are suffering because of buildings in the waterways. Government must act now before more lives are lost,” a distressed resident lamented.
The Assembly Member for Gomoa Buduburam Electoral Area, Emmanuel Dogbey, described the situation as “terrible” and in urgent need of government intervention.
“This is beyond us at the local level. We need immediate support from NADMO and the central government to restore the road and prevent future floods,” he said.
Residents are urging authorities to prioritize long-term drainage solutions and enforcement of building regulations to prevent a recurrence. As of now, the road remains cut off, with normal life in the affected communities disrupted.
